My Free Comic Book Day 2014.

First of all, lets see how adorable my son looked on his first Free Comic Book Day!

Quite a lot of things have happened recently that made this one of the craziest Free Comic Book Days of our lives.  Mostly, the fact that we now have a car.  Yes, it only took me 36 years to buy my first car.  What better way to get used to it then a crazy drive around central New York.  Plus, the night before we had to upgrade our phones and bought iPhones.  Our first smart phones!  With the guidance of Google Maps app we were able to find our way around and make it to three stores.  Well, attempt to.

Our first stop was a bust.  I’m not going to name the negatives but lets just say I was disappointed.  We arrived at 11AM to be told that all of the Free Comics were gone.  All of them.  Two hours into Free Comic Book DAY.  Also, supposedly these were limited to two per person.  “We ordered thousands!”  No.  No you didn’t.  There are at least six stores within a half hour radius of this store.  You did not get thousands.  You ordered low amounts.  I found out later that readers who showed up at 10AM arrived to find zero comics as well.  I was willing to believe the comics were gone in two hours.  I doubted it, but I was willing to believe.  But one hour?  Not a chance.

However, they did have a buy 2 get the third free sale on new comics so I picked up six books here.

From here we took off and tried Comix Zone in North Syracuse.  After the bust that was the first store I was wary.  Surely four hours into the day nothing will be left.

I was pleasantly wrong.

Every single comic I wanted was there.  This store had a limit of three per person, so the wife and I each grabbed three.  The only comic out of all 60 that was gone was the Kaboom book featuring Adventure Time.  Totally understandable.  Its a huge cartoon and popular comic.

Not only did Comix Zone have all the free ones I was looking for, but also fresh new issues and graphic novels.  We stocked up.  I couldn’t have been happier with the selection.  The first store was sold out of so many titles yet every one of them was well represented on the stands. This is a well stocked store.

Two things that shocked me.  One, they were sold out of Original Sin #0 and Southern Bastards #1.  These two books are going to be big.  I’d find a high grade copy of Southern to get CGC right now.  Also, I have shyed away from the Marvel Universe figures because of the ridiculous high prices.  Grocery stores, big box stores, all of them have these toys for $12-15 minimum.  Yet here, 10 bucks.  I’m willing to start a collection for that price.

After a big purchase and a wonderful friendly talk with the staff we headed out to a third store to see what could be found.

And found it closed.

At 5pm.

5PM on a Saturday, not just any Saturday, but FCBD Saturday. Of all the days during the year, this is the one to maybe be open a little longer.  Or at least “expected” retail hours (until 8 or 9 PM).

The day ended with a bust but thanks to Comix Zone being everything a good comic shop should be, it was an incredible day.

So lets take a look at the haul!
