It’s the over the top rope annual tradition! In two hour long plus matches, 30 men and 30 women will battle until only one remains. That winning man and woman is guaranteed to go on to WrestleMania to compete for the World title. Who is seen as the main event talent? Who gets the push? Will they succeed like last year’s winners Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins? Or will they fail on the grandest stage of them all like 2018 winners Asuka and Shinsuke Nakamura? Only time will tell. But tonight we will all guess which one out of thirty options will win it all. Plus other matches that will fill out the card.
In my armchair wrestling booking, I try to look at the entire card and where this big story fits into the even larger story. Every pay per view event should have something that matters. A title change, or a big gimmick. Something that warrants this being a special event and not just another episode of Raw or Smackdown. The two Royal Rumble matches are spectacles. Thus there is no reason to have another event happen. Looking at the title matches tonight, I don’t see any of the challengers as a stronger option than the current champions heading into WrestleMania. Thus, in the following matches:
Andrade (United States champion) vs. Humberto Carrillo.
Bayley (Smackdown Women’s champion) vs. Lacey Evans.
Becky Lynch (Raw Women’s champion) vs. Asuka.
“The Fiend” Bray Wyatt (Universal (Smackdown) champion) vs. Daniel Bryan. Strap match.
I am predicting every champion to retain their titles. Andrade just started his build. Lacey isn’t there yet. Becky gets more from finally defeating Asuka than Asuka gets by winning. The Fiend needs to stay strong.
In other non Rumble matches:
Shorty G vs. Sheamus.
I don’t know what is going on with this whole Shorty G character. My guess is Sheamus is going to use his veteran status to get Shorty over and build him up into a star.
Winner: Shorty G.
Roman Reigns vs. King Corbin. Falls Count Anywhere match.
Both men are in the Rumble. Corbin is arguably the most hated man in wrestling. The feud is still hot and keeps pulling in other people, making it the biggest story on Smackdown. I don’t see it ending here. Corbin will win by some nefarious means. The two will collide again in the Rumble, possibly eliminating each other.
Winner: King Corbin.
Women’s Royal Rumble:
There are less than 10 out of the 30 names announced for this Rumble. Which makes the whole thing more wide open than the men’s one this year. Any number of women from NXT, NXT UK, new signings, returns, and surprises could happen. But only one can challenge Becky or Bayley at WrestleMania. This is going to depend on if the winner is an expected name, or a surprise.
Expected: Charlotte. She’s going to win this eventually, has come close in the past, and is destined for her legacy.
Surprise: Becky defeats Asuka earlier in the evening, getting her win back. She says something about conquering everyone. Being The Man. Then at number 30 comes the returning Ronda Rousey who wants a rematch against Becky at ‘Mania.
Men’s Royal Rumble:
Brock Lesnar is entering at number one, which throws everything off. There are also 27 out of 30 names announced, so not a whole lot of room for surprise. I’m thinking that Brock easily throws out number 2, 3, maybe a few more. Eventually someone stronger like a Samoa Joe comes out and lasts until the next competitor. Brock is tired and the ring starts to fill up. He gets quick bursts of energy to dump out someone else but takes a long breather. Maybe he’s even on the outside and forgotten about. Someone gets made tonight by taking him out. Then goes on to challenge Brock for the title at WrestleMania.
Expected: Drew McIntyre. He’s finally built up to be a monster and after years of starts and stops might be his time.
Surprise: Someone with an agenda against Brock, like Goldberg or the Undertaker. Matt Riddle would be a great counter to Brock but there’s no way he gets that big a push out of no where.
Who do you think will win tonight? Let me know in the comments!
