NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day Predictions

How are you spending Valentine’s Day? Hopefully next to someone you love watching two hours of a live pro wrestling event. The Superstars of NXT will battle it out tonight instead of going out on dates. As usual for pay per views I’m going to try to guess the winners not based off of who I want to win, but off of where I think the stories are going next.

Io Shirai (NXT Womens champion) vs. Toni Storm vs. Mercedes Martinez.

Io has been a great champion, Toni could hold any WWE women’s title at any time. But I think this might be Mercedes’s next to last and best shot at winning a women’s title for a major promotion. She’s looking great in recent weeks, she can cut a promo, and she could be a heel champion holding off all challengers by any means necessary. Io has been champion for 250 days, since June, and doesn’t have anything else to prove. Time to switch it up.

Winner and new champion: Mercedes Martinez.

Dakota Kai and Raquel González vs. Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart. Women’s Dusty Cup Finals.

The winners get a shot at the WWE Women’s tag team titles and for that reason alone I’m picking the heels. There’s more stories to be told with the Dakota and Raquel. With an eventual split of course. Ember and Shotzi can be fine to continue as partners, to go their separate ways, or even for a heel turn.

Winners: Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez.

MSK (Nash Carter and Wes Lee) vs. Grizzled Young Veterans (James Drake and Zack Gibson). Men’s Dusty Cup Finals.

I have been impressed with the MSK story so far but WWE has a history of pushing someone only to pull the brakes at the last minute so they don’t get egos. Also for some reason someone loves GYV.

Winners: Grizzled Young Veterans.

Finn Bálor (NXT Champion) vs. Pete Dunne.

I still think this should have been vs Kyle O’Reily round 3. There are still lots of stories to tell with Finn as champ. Including dropping that belt to Kyle.

Winner and still champion: Finn Balor.

Johnny Gargano (NXT North American champion) vs. Kushida.

This push for Kushida has been great and well deserved. But Johnny already did his quick title switch to someone else. If the Leon Ruff reign didn’t happen I could see a quick switch here. As that did happen though, it wont happen again. Also I would not be surprised to see Austin Theory turn on The Way and challenge for the title later this year.

Winner and still champion: Johnny Gargano.
